A robust data foundation for informed decisions in water management
Hot summers, droughts, and changing precipitation patterns are posing increasing challenges to Switzerland’s water supply. While the total annual precipitation remains stable, its distribution is shifting: more precipitation in winter, less in summer. The question of how water resources should be managed in the future is thus becoming increasingly important.
Many water management decisions lack the necessary data foundation because the federal government has not established uniform guidelines for data collection. It is only possible to track, to a limited extent, which water volumes are used when, where, and for what purpose. Consequently, the discussion regarding better coordination among stakeholders and the development of shared data platforms is becoming increasingly important.
